How to bring visitors to your Web site

An Online Handbook

Previous -   Duplicate Content Next - Web site statistics

Web page editors that allow you to work with the page as it will be seen more or less by visitors (WYSIWYG- What You See is What You Get) are a reasonable compromise between hand coding pages to get them perfect, and junk turned out by bad Content Management Systems.

Microsoft Web Designer or Front Page are adequate Web design tools as is Adobe Dreamweaver and some others. However, all such tools have some defects you need to keep in mind.

What you see is not quite what you get - A page in the design window of the editor may look very different from the same page in the preview screen, and the preview window version may not be the same as what is shown in different browsers.

Junk in code- You need to check the source code to remove rubbish that these tools put into it all the time such as <FONT FACE = "ARIAL"></FONT> which can have no purpose. Adobe Dream Weaver is also a popular tool, but beware of proliferation of hundreds of "styles" that serve no purpose in the code.

Optimization - Editors usually don't care about things like metatags in the header, tags for graphics and titles for links. It is up to you to make sure they are correct. Worse, some editors will insert their own garbage in the header code, which needs to be carefully removed.

Some popular editors - In addition to Dream Weaver, Web Designer and Front Page, we can mention some other editors that are free -

NVU - http://www.nvu.com

Mozilla Composer - http://www.mozilla.org/editor

These are just two popular examples.

Online Editors

There are numerous Online HTML editors offered by Web hosting companies and private individuals. Usually these are slow and have limited functionality.

Link Checker

If your site has many bad links, especially to internal pages, this can detract from your ranking score. There are numerous tools that will find unreachable pages or bad links. Xenu is free - http://home.snafu.de/tilman/xenulink.html and it is excellent. Link checkers should be built-in to editing tools, but sometimes the facilities provided are not really adequate.
