This section is not primarily about search engine optimization (SEO) but there are search related
issues. If you want to make a living or side income from advertising at your Web site you can do so. Google Adsense and
other advertisers will pay you every time someone clicks on an advertisement posted at your site. Unless your site is
getting about 200,000 visitors a week or perhaps more, don't expect to make a living from such advertisements.
Affiliate programs offer a percentage of sales from your Web site in return for placing their
links. The typical experience of most Web site owners is that such links might pay a tiny sum over a very long period. I
am not saying that will be your experience, but it seems that the only sure way to make money from affiliate programs
may be to forcibly redirect visitors to the affiliate Web site. The visitor thinks they are going to a page about
flowers or pets for example, but instead is redirected to a site that sells flowers or pet food or someone's book.
That practice is justifiably considered unethical (Black Hat SEO). Search engines may or may not care if you do
this, but you should. Your visitors will not appreciate it.
Advertisements are related to SEO in two ways. Because of its adsense campaign, Google makes
available to the public, including potential advertisers, the frequency of searches for specific keywords and a lot of
other useful information. Adsense and other advertising software can sense what content is on your page according to
keywords on that that page and will place advertising related to your keywords.
Some types of advertisements, such as advertisements for flowers, higher education or oil-rigging
equipment, are more expensive than others and will bring a higher return per click.
You can design Web sites and pages that will display advertisements in the high-paying categories
by targeting the relevant keywords.
