Directory Listings
Web directories are lists of Web sites compiled either automatically or by editors. Some of the better ones provide
useful information about the sites and may allow visitors and others to rank them. Web directories do not use spiders to
crawl a site. They may or may not accept listings for individual pages beneath the main URL.
It is important to get your site listed in major directories, and generally, the more legitimate directories list
you, the better it is for your site, as these are additional links that add to search engine popularity. Directory
listings are generally divided into free and paid listings, general directories and directories that cover specific
areas. Many of these services are conscientiously edited, though editors may have a "point of view" that causes them to
be biased. Other important characteristics of directories are the page rank of the directory and of the page where you
are going to be listed, and the time it takes them to review and add links. The time can vary from instantly to a few
days to several weeks. Some of these directories are exploitation tools.
The crowned queen of free directory listings is www.dmoz.org- a user edited volunteer directory project. Listings may reflect
the quirks of the editors, but they are respected and authoritative.
www.dmoz.org has a Google pagerank of 8 out of 10,
which means it is very authoritative, but most pages in it have pageranks of around 4 or 5.

is a business to business directory. After you sign up there is a message saying that they "strongly
recommend" that you submit your site to 350 other directories or some similar message. That form is for a paid
submission service.
Most paid directories charge in the neighborhood of $10 for a listing. Yahoo charges $299 for a business listing at
present. Yahoo supposedly allows free listing of non-profit Web sites in their directory, but this link redirects at
present to a help page.
