SEO - Over-Optimization - Too much of a Good thing?

It is claimed, without much proof, that too much optimization will penalize your Web page for a particular Keyword. For example, If the keyword is in the anchor text of a link, it is supposedly bad to repeat precisely that text in the title tag of the link. Likewise, overly high concentrations of key words are though to be used as signals of spamming.

This is almost certainly true for blatant abuse of key phrases, where Google may apply specific filters. Within reason, I have not found this to be true, however. Of course, if half the words on a page are the keyword, it might cause your page to be banned, either because someone complains, or because search engines know how to detect such abuse.

Overoptimization is probably penalized selectively for special cases - for example - to protect against "Google Bombing" by putting the same peculiar phrase in thousands of links to raise the position of a Web page. These practices may trip a filter that will result in demotion of the page.

One thing that does seem to be true: Do not repeat the text in the  <TITLE>Widget</TITLE> tag in the <HEAD> in a second <META name="Title" content="Widget"> tag with the same text. That doesn't help and it may hurt.
