SEO Superstitions:
Google Pagerank Doesn't
Count
Claim:
Google Pagerank is no longer important for page or site positioning.
Status: False
Several SEO "experts" have asserted or implied that
Google Pagerank
doesn't count any more in optimizing
pages and sites. They claim instead that
number of links from authoritative sites does count. However, pagerank is just a numerical expression of the number and
quality of the links to a page. It might be true that pagerank has less influence or importance than it did at one time,
but pagerank of the main page of the site in particular certainly seems to be related to positioning of the main page
and of subsidiary pages.
What does seem to be true is that the pagerank of the main page of a Web site may influence the listing of a page
within that site for a key word. A new page in CNN.com may have no pagerank, but it might have a higher placement for a
keyword because CNN.com does have a higher pagerank. It is also true that Google has played around quite a bit with
pagerank, or at least with the public display of pagerank, so it is hard to know if what they are listing as pagerank is
what they are using to determine the placement of a page.
