An Online Handbook

Previous - How people search the Web   Next - Choosing a Web Host

Essentials

Following are essentials for any Web site:

Choosing the hosting and type of Web site - these may be the most important decisions you make.

Content - Choosing content that is interesting and that will draw visitors if it is properly advertised on the Web. If your site is uninteresting, even if your product or idea is great, people will not come. If it doesn't contain content that interests visitors, then the pages cannot usually optimized for interesting content.

Choosing key words and the message that fit your product, are popular search terms and do not have a lot of competition.

Internal design- Designing the URL, the site and the page to support the effort of "telling" the search engines that a particular page is about a particular topic.

External design - Setting up support Web sites and Web logs, and linking to the page or site using the appropriate key words in the text; exchanging links with other Web sites and pages.

Submissions to search engines and directories like DMOZ (not needed for Google)

Fresh content - Keep the site growing and fresh - add something new each week at least, and preferably each day. This can be done in part by attaching a Web log or Content Management System to a part of your Web site and sending new content there by e-mail.
