If you put all that effort into creating your Web site, you certainly want people to see what is there, don't you?
SEO Basics
The major source of Web site visitors is search engines. SEO - Search Engine Optimization for Web sites, is the art
of making your site visible on Search Engines. That is what drives visitors to your Web site. Making your web site
visible on search engines depends on:
* Type of software used to create your Web pages.
* Content
* Keywords
* Page Design
* Site Design
* Links
Search Engine Optimization involves a lot of work and B*O*R*I*N*G technical details. Is it worth it? The right decisions
can bring tens of thousands of extra visitors a month to your Web site. If you were advertising, you would be paying
about 10 cents for every visitor.
What do you prefer - 10,000 visitors a week for free or ten thousand visitors for $1000.00, paid week after week??
That is over $ 50,000 a year. Of course SEO is worth the effort.

Why is this SEO Web site different from all other SEO Web sites?
I am not selling you anything. I do not build Web sites for a living. You can use the information here to build your
own Web site or to evaluate consultant services. The SEO knowledge I can give you was all learned the hard way - by
building Web sites that compete for popular keywords and getting them to the top 10 listings of Google. These sites get
tens of thousands of visitors every week. Your site can too if you do the right things.
Is SEO a lot of Work?
Building a good Web site is a lot of work. A good Web site should have several thousand Web pages to be competitive
for really popular subjects or products. Creating the content and managing your business or organization is most of the
work. Getting the optimization right is work, but it is mostly a matter of doing the right things from the start - or
a one time conversion.
Does this guy know anything about SEO?
My main and oldest Web site is MidEastWeb: Middle East
http://mideastweb.org. This table shows the
position rank of various pages from that Web site for different keywords. You be the judge:
| Keyword |
Position Rank |
Total # of pages indexed by Google |
| Middle East Maps |
#2 |
22,000,000 |
| Middle East History |
#6 |
133,000,000 |
| Map of Israel |
#5 |
18,500,000 |
| Map of Iraq |
#1 |
11,000,00 |
| Zionism |
#2 |
4,000,000 |
Note: Google position results vary depending on your location and change over time. The number of pages reported as indexed also changes from time to time.
Does SEO Require Professional Design?
Pretty Web sites certainly require professional design. But SEO does not necessarily require professional design.
Wikipedia was built and is maintained by amateurs. MidEastWeb was built by an amateur. Many of those millions of Web
pages and sites that are buried in the listings below MidEastWeb and Wikipedia were built by professionals, but those
professionals didn't know or care about Search Engine Optimization. The Titanic was built by professionals; the Ark was
built by an amateur.
Check the Google listings for your site and Web pages for keywords and phrases that are
important to you. If you have a fairly large Web site and don't appear among the top ten listings, it's time to talk to
your Webmaster.
